For a Galveston family fishing charter with kids, book a four-hour inshore trip: Galveston Bay Redfish ($300-$375 per boat) or Speckled Trout on the Flats ($325-$400). Both take up to four anglers. Bring sun protection, grippy shoes and snacks, and ask the captain what the boat provides. Cancel 72 or more hours out and you get a full refund.
This guide is for parents planning a first or second trip. It follows our Galveston fishing charter cost guide, which covers prices and what is biting.
Which Galveston trips suit families
Four of the six trips on our Galveston page are half-day (4 hours). Two are full-day (8 hours). For kids, the half-day trips are the ones to look at. Prices are per boat, not per person.
| Trip | Type | Anglers | Price per boat | Family fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galveston Bay Redfish | Inshore, 4 h | Up to 4 | $300-$375 | Best first trip. Shallow bay water, light tackle. |
| Speckled Trout on the Flats | Inshore, 4 h | Up to 4 | $325-$400 | Good for early starts. Topwater in the morning. |
| South Jetty Bull Reds | Nearshore, 4 h | Up to 4 | $350-$425 | Bigger fish close to shore. Better for older kids. |
| Spanish Mackerel and Kings | Nearshore, 4 h | Up to 6 | $425-$525 | Listed as good for larger groups and beginners. |
The two full-day trips, Bay Mixed Bag and Kings and State-Water Snapper, are eight hours. Unless your kids are old hands, skip them. Attention and sunscreen both run out before hour five.
Half-day inshore or nearshore: how to choose
Inshore means Galveston Bay itself. The water is shallower and more sheltered, and the redfish trip is described as light tackle sight-fishing. Nearshore means the jetty and the rigs just off the coast. You get bigger fish and faster action, and the water is more open.
Our rule for families:
- Kids under about 8, or anyone new to fishing: inshore half-day.
- Kids who have caught fish before and want a bigger bite: South Jetty Bull Reds.
- Six in the party, or a few grandparents along: Spanish Mackerel and Kings, the only half-day trip with room for six.
Ask one thing before you pick: does each child count toward the angler cap? Captains differ. A family of four on the $300 redfish trip pays $75 each. Add a fifth and you may need the six-seat boat.
For more on trip length, see half-day vs. full-day on the Texas Gulf Coast.
What to bring on a Galveston charter with kids
Pack for four hours of sun and water with no shade and no corner store.
- Sunscreen and reapply it. Water throws the light back at you. Bring a stick for faces.
- Hats and sunglasses. A hat with a chin strap or cord beats one that blows overboard.
- Shoes with grip. Closed-toe, non-marking soles. A wet deck is slick, and flip-flops are a bad idea.
- Snacks and water. More than you think. Hungry kids end trips early. Skip anything messy or very salty.
- A light layer. Early mornings on the bay can be cool, and wind on the way out adds to it.
- A towel and a spare shirt. Kids get wet. Fish slime is real.
- A cooler bag if you plan to take fish home. Ask first whether the boat has ice.
Motion sickness: prepare before you leave the dock
Plan for it even if your kids have never had trouble. Eat a light breakfast. Do not start a trip on an empty stomach or a greasy one. On the water, have kids look at the horizon, not at a phone or a tangle of line.
If anyone in your family gets carsick, ask your pediatrician or pharmacist what is right for your child, and what time to give it. Do not guess on dosing. And tell the captain. A good one will pick a calmer spot, or head back early.
An inshore half-day is the kindest test of sea legs. If your child is prone to sickness, that is another reason to start there and not at the jetty.
What the boat provides
Practices vary by captain and boat, so confirm each item before you pay. The usual list:
- Rods, reels, tackle and bait. Most captains supply them. Ask whether there are kid-sized rods.
- Ice and a cooler. Some boats have them, some do not.
- Life jackets. Ask for child sizes by weight, and ask before the day, not at the dock.
- Fish cleaning. Often done at the dock for a tip. Ask whether it is included.
- Fishing licenses. Rules depend on the state and the captain's license. Check with Texas Parks and Wildlife if the answer is vague.
- Tip. Not included in the boat rate.
Put these questions in the note field of your request, or text them back once the captain replies. A captain who answers cleanly in two lines runs a tidy boat.
Refunds and weather: the terms in plain words
Parents plan around nap schedules and school calendars. The weather policy matters as much as the price. Here is the standard policy:
- Full refund if you cancel 72 or more hours before departure.
- 50% credit (credit, not cash) if you cancel within 72 hours of departure.
- Full refund if the captain cancels, for any reason including weather.
- The captain has sole discretion on whether the weather is safe.
If the weather says no, the captain says no, and your money comes back. October on Galveston Bay brings wind and the first real fronts, so build a spare day into your trip. Captains set their own terms, so confirm them in your quote. Submitting a request on our site is not a charge. A captain confirms availability and sends a booking link before any payment.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a 4-hour fishing trip in Galveston cost? On our Galveston page, four-hour trips run $300 to $525 per boat, depending on the trip. Inshore trips start at $300. Prices are per boat, not per person, and the captain confirms a final quote after your request.
What is the best month to fish in Galveston? We can speak for October. Redfish are staging on the flats, speckled trout are stacking on the grass, bull reds are at the South Jetty, and flounder are moving through the passes. For other months, ask the captain what is biting that week.
What age can kids go fishing on a charter? We do not set a minimum age. Captains do, and it varies by boat. Ask when you request, and ask for life jackets that fit your child. Tell the captain about any first-timers.
Ready to pick a date? Send a half-day request on the Galveston request form, and add your kids' ages to the note.
