What is biting in Galveston in October

October is a good month to fish Galveston. The trip listings say why, species by species.

  • Redfish. They are staging on the bay flats and grass edges before the fall run. Light tackle, sight-fishing in shallow water. Speckled trout often mix in.
  • Speckled trout. They stack on the grass flats as water temperatures cool. Topwater in the mornings, soft plastics through midday.
  • Bull reds. Oversized redfish gather at the Galveston South Jetty on their fall spawn migration. October is the peak window, and they are close to shore.
  • Flounder. October is the top month for flounder migrating through the passes. The Bay Mixed Bag trip targets them along with redfish and trout.
  • Spanish and king mackerel. They run the nearshore rigs and rock structure. Fast surface action.
  • Amberjack and red snapper. Amberjack and kings on nearshore structure, plus red snapper inside Texas state waters, which means within 9 nautical miles.

You can see the full "biting now" notes next to each trip on the Galveston trips page.

Half-day or full-day: what the price difference buys

A four-hour trip costs less than half of an eight-hour one on most rows. The full-day Bay Mixed Bag is $600-$725 against $300-$400 for the half-day inshore trips. What you pay for is time to move spots and chase three species instead of one.

For most families, the half-day is the better buy. Four hours covers a morning of topwater trout or a run of redfish on the flats, and nobody is worn out by noon. We go through the full reasoning in half-day vs. full-day on the Texas Gulf Coast.

The two full-day trips are different animals. The Bay Mixed Bag stays inshore. The Kings and State-Water Snapper trip is a longer run that needs a larger vessel, so offshore rates apply: $750-$900.

Group size matters too. Spanish Mackerel and Kings takes up to six anglers and is listed as a good trip for larger groups and beginners. At $425-$525 per boat, six people pay less each than four people on the bull red trip.

What the price does not include

The listed price is the boat rate. A few things sit outside it, and you should ask about each before you pay.

  1. Tip. Not included. Our Gulf Coast booking guide puts 15 to 20 percent as standard for a solid trip. Budget for it up front.
  2. Fishing license. Rules depend on the state and on how the captain is licensed. Ask whether your party needs its own, and check with Texas Parks and Wildlife if the answer is vague.
  3. Ice, coolers and fish cleaning. Practice differs from boat to boat. Ask.
  4. Final quote. The range is typical for the Galveston area. The captain's confirmed quote comes after you request.
